In this first entry in Contradictions' "conceptual dictionary," the authors present an intellectual history of the notion of ideology, following it from its emergence in the writings of baron Destutt de Tracy, through the classical reformulations of Marx and Engels and the term's influential reinterpretation by Lenin, to recent attempts to understand the significance of ideology in contemporary society, by theorists like Louis Althusser, Fredric Jameson, and Slavoj Žižek.
