In this interview, Étienne Balibar discusses the thought of his teacher, Louis Althusser, one of the leading Marxist philosophers of the second half of the twentieth century, whose concepts of overdetermination, symptomatic reading, epistemic break, ideology, and ideological state apparatuses made a major impact on Marxist as well as poststructuralist thought. Balibar was one of Althusser’s closest collaborators and friends and has analyzed his work in a number of texts. The interview was conducted in January 2013 by Petr Kužel, who also edited it and translated it into Czech.
