We print here a Czech translation, made by Lubomír Sochor of this important chapter in Herbert Marcuse's Eros and Civilization, in which Marcuse lays out the bases of his theory of aesthetic autonomy and its relation to freedom and the Freudian notion of repression. The whole book, in Sochor's translation, was initially set to appear in 1970, but changing political circumstances caused the publication to be cancelled.
